Evony’s newest mounted general, Henry IV, is inspired by the historical founder of France’s Bourbon dynasty. In this guide, we’ll cover how to unlock Henry IV, break down his buffs, compare his performance with Louis XIV, and share practical pairing recommendations for mounted-focused builds.

General Background
Born into the House of Bourbon, Henry IV spent his early life in the small mountain kingdom of Navarre, a region wedged between the great powers of France and Spain. Ruling a modest realm shaped his pragmatic leadership style and kept him closely connected to the concerns of ordinary people.
During France’s brutal Wars of Religion, Henry rose as the leading figure of the Huguenots. Through strategic maneuvering in the War of the Three Henrys, he ultimately claimed the French crown. However, the kingdom he inherited was deeply divided by religious extremism and political mistrust.
Choosing stability over ideology, Henry converted to Catholicism and later issued the Edict of Nantes, establishing Catholicism as the state religion while granting key protections to Protestant communities. With the help of his trusted minister, Duke Sully, he rebuilt the treasury, strengthened royal authority, and brought decades of civil conflict to an end.
Although assassinated by a fanatic, Henry IV remains remembered as “the Good King”—a ruler known for compromise, realism, and his lasting contribution to France’s unity and recovery.

In terms of attack bonuses against mounted troops, Henry IV and Louis XIV are roughly equal. As a main general, Henry IV is slightly stronger, while as an assistant general, their performance is almost identical.
When it comes to cavalry defense and HP, Henry IV outperforms Louis XIV, whether serving as a main or assistant general.
However, regarding bonuses against march size, Henry IV falls short of Louis XIV in both roles.
Additionally, many of Louis XIV’s attributes only take effect during attacks, whereas most of Henry IV’s attributes are effective unconditionally. This makes Henry IV more versatile, suitable for attacking, defending, and reinforcing alike.
