Historical Background

Born in 1553 to King Henry II of France and the formidable Catherine de’ Medici, Margaret’s life was forged in the fires of religious upheaval and Machiavellian court intrigue.

In 1572, her marriage to Henry of Navarre was intended to bridge the bloody divide between Catholics and Protestants. Instead, the wedding served as the backdrop for the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre. Despite the chaos, Margaret remained loyal to Henry during their subsequent confinement in the Louvre.

After a volatile fallout with her brother, King Henry III, Margaret was exiled to Auvergne. There, she defied her restraints, seized control of local affairs, and demonstrated her political acumen. Following the annulment of her childless marriage, she returned to Paris in 1605, retaining her title as Queen. Her posthumous fame was secured both by her own Memoirs—a rare firsthand account of the Wars of Religion—and Alexandre Dumas’s classic novel, La Reine Margot.

The comparison above shows that Stephen the Great is better suited to defense-oriented players, as most of his buffs apply to troops stationed within the city. By contrast, Margaret of Valois favors offense-focused playstyles, with buffs primarily affecting troops while attacking. In terms of research speed, Margaret holds a slight advantage. Moreover, when considering buffs that apply to all four troop types without conditions, Margaret offers broader coverage than Stephen.
